Transcendence (2014)

TranscendenceWell, there are some good ingredients in Transcendence, numerous references to up-to-date technology, all put in the blender along with some terrorists (ah, these people! they are unbelievable in what they may do!) and the juice is ready to pour! Well, it is not entirely bad, just do not expect too much.

The Human Stain (2003)

TheHumanStainWhy did I like “The Human Stain” so much? Because it speaks of so many important things with a direct and indirect way at the same time. About things one is born with and can do nothing to change, the decisions made because of them, friendship, the desire to live and enjoy life, the realization of what is important and what is not, the measure of sorrow, a caress that was intended but was not given, a hug that means different things for two people who care for each other…

Well, it is based on a book with the same title and despite the fact that I have not read the book, Robert Benton made an amazing movie played by an amazing cast. This is not a film to be missed.

September (2013)

SeptemberThe story is simple and the strength of the movie is not in the story. It is in the acting (even by small kids), the direction and the fact that it is one of these movies where almost everything is said without words. It is the face of the actor, the scenes, the sequence of the events that convey all the feelings about the loss of someone you love, the struggle to get some support while in that position, and what other people are willing to do (or not) in order to help. It is also about life itself, which has its turns and the light may hit you when you are inside the tunnel. Humane, realistic and optimistic (after all).

Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)

StarTrekIntoDarknessCan’t say I did not like it. But everything in “Star Trek Into Darkness” was played in another episode of the series. There is nothing original in this film. It is like a patchwork of all previous films and ideas (except probably of the opening which is borrowed from another film). It is amazing: four people participated in the scenario to have this outcome! Seems that the originality of the first TV series is unsurpassed…

My rating: 06/10 (for its kind)

The Big Year (2011)

TheBigYearThe Big Year is a film about birds and bird observers. People that are passionate observing birds, devoting a big part of their life try to see them, hear them, admire them. Well, I am a nature fan (walking the mountains is a favorite activity of mine) and despite the fact that I do not share the passion I sympathize!

So, the subject is an original one, the plot is not bad and there are numerous funny moments. The point however where the film shows its real beauty (for me) is on the finish line, i.e. in the last five minutes. For these five minutes, which of course build on the remaining film, it gets…

The Attack (2012)

The AttackThe Attack” is a film about love, friendship, trust, betrayal, hate, beliefs and much more. First of all, it is a great movie to see. Direction by Ziad Doueiri is excellent, it has a gripping story (L’attentat is a best seller) which combined with the acting of all actors involved totally immerses the spectator in the film’s story. It is also a film that raises numerous issues for discussion.

Most of all, it is from these films that have a point (or more) to make (as I suppose does the book). So, unless the story is unveiled, one cannot really discuss about the film.

Things I liked in the film:

  • The thanking speech of the Arab surgeon when he was awarded the prize
  • The way his memories unfolded about his wife
  • The scene when he was watching the video at the end

So, the rest of the post contains spoilers and it is up to you if you want to read it before or after seeing the film.
