The Vanishing (Spoorloos) (1988)

thevanishingThe Vanishing is probably one of the worst movies I have ever seen. It depends obviously on the way a movie is evaluated. If we just want to see the plot, the acting, the generated emotions and leave it there, then ok, it is a good movie. But a film is much more, IMHO, than just something to spend two hours with. It is a piece of art which reflects an opinion and an attitude about life itself. Is this what George Sluizer (the director) and Tim Krabbé (the book author) distilled from life in order to make a film? Or did they sacrifice their vision of life in the altar of story originality?

Spoorloos is an insult to humanity. With so many insults around us, it is really too much to promote film like this.

My rating: 01/10 (for the reasons cited above)

  1. A very different opinion to mine. How interesting!

    • To start with, it is great to know that diversity is tolerated 🙂 What do you think about judging films as standalone items vs in the context of life?

      • Sorry, I don’t really understand the question. Would you expand?

  2. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to elaborate: https://10000movies.wordpress.com/judging-a-film/
